Dez was informed today that he won’t be a Cowboy next season, to the surprise of… no one. You don’t usually see a WR take a paycut, or restructure on behalf of the team, especially a WR that is a me-first guy. Dez was that guy. Not as bad as TO, or Michael Irvin, but those guys’ success on the field allowed them to behave and negotiate those type of contracts. While he had up and down seasons in his tenure with the Cowboys, game winners, and catches that should have counted… it was a tumultuous relationship. Hell, he still has the ability to play the game at the highest level, but the guy isn’t a team player. The Cowboys need team players that will help the young nucleus grow, and succeed. He ain’t that guy… So while it sucks to lose your WR1, we saw the writing on the wall well before today.

If I didn’t have my edge I got it now… I’m sorry they got to feel me it’s personal… it’s very personal

With the addition of Allen Hurns in the offseason, and the interviewing of all the rookie wideouts, most knew Dallas wouldn’t be bringing Dez back unless he finagled his own contract. He sure as fuck wasn’t gonna give Jerry some of his owed money… so what do we do next? How do we replace a WR that doesn’t like contact, and only runs routes on the outside?
Easy… draft anybody you want, rely on the committee of receivers that surround Dak, and let the playmakers make plays in 2018. I’m not sure if Calvin Ridley will be around when it gets to Dallas’ pick, but there are other solid guys in the draft. None of them will be as big or strong as Dez, but at the same time, replacing him won’t be as difficult as one would think. Let me float a totally unlikely hypothetical… trade for OBJ, and sign him to a long fucking contract… IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES. Obviously it wouldn’t help us with the circumstances we’re in now, eating contract dollars left and right, but one can dream right? Doubtful the Giants would ever trade their blue-chip player to an inter-divisional opponent, especially Jerry’s team… but holy shit wouldn’t that be awesome. Anyway, back to Dez…
Dez has been “meh” throughout his career, and that may be because we had such lofted expectations, but c’est la vie.. this is the game we play. I am not gonna bore you with stats and shit, cuz no one cares about them since it didn’t result in the wins when we needed them the most (fucking Packers game…). He wasn’t the guy he once was, he didn’t take over games or demand a double team every time down the field… It just wasn’t meant to be. He will wind up being an All Pro WR for someone like Flacco or Rodgers… just our luck… but whatever.
In summation, I wish Dez nothing but the best and hope he doesn’t end up in our division or conference. I’m sure he will land on his feet somewhere, then fumble the ball on the one, only to be ruled incomplete. GLBOL Dez, it was fun while it lasted.
