We Are A Week Into The World Cup & I Can’t Take My Eyes Off It

We are now through the first slate of group games in this year’s World Cup and it has been entertaining to say the least. It seems as if everyday we are treated to a surprise result, whether it be Mexico beating the reigning champs Germany, Iceland tying Leo Messi’s Argentina, or Brazil looking sheepish in a tie with Switzerland.
The reason why Mexico beat Germany revealed…😂😂😂 pic.twitter.com/yIejAqPsz0

So far the World Cup has been spectacular. Early on we were treated to a 3-3 tie between Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal and one of the tournament’s big favorite, Spain. Ronaldo put up all 3 goals for Portugal, who looked poised to make a name for themselves on the big stage. Spain on the other hand looked resilient coming back from two 1 goal deficits.
A day later we saw the cinderella story Iceland eek out a draw against the most overrated team in the tournament, Argentina. Argentina dominated the game, however they did not look like they had any sort of clear team identity, which could ultimately be their undoing in the tournament.
In other games of note, Mexico knocked off a very sluggish looking Germany. The question from here… is Germany just rusty, or are they no longer the team that won the title in 2014?
Tournament favorites Brazil also came out of the gates slow, as they were held to a draw by Switzerland. The South Americans did not look very cohesive, spending a lot of the game defending in their on half, (not what you want when you have the best attacking force in the world).
One team who took a big step forward was Belgium, who bulldozed Panama 3-0. It’s a great start for a team who for as talented as they are, have much to prove on the big stage.
Last but not least, group H favorites Colombia started the tournament off on the losing side after having a man sent off in the 3rd minute of their tournament opener against Japan.
Could the tournament be shaping out this way because it’s only the first round and the players are shaking off the rust? It shouldn’t be, they are only a month removed from the club season. Maybe the tournament is just more open than we thought it would be. With that being said, I still expect the big boys to be in the final rounds, they are just taking the long way there.
