Last night the New York Jetropoltians, home of the best QB room in football, played their first preseason game of the year. Now brace yourself,,, things went very well. For most franchises that would be very exciting. However, as a Jets fan all this does is scare you. I’ve been hurt in the past. We all have. I’ve been guilty of getting excited a little ahead of schedule before.
Then I learn the hard way.
However, this time I am just going to be cautiously optimistic. There were a lot of good things, but also some bad things. The final score was 17-0, so it is safe to say the defense played very well. But they also were facing Matt Schaub, Garrett Grayson, and Kurt Benkert at QB, sooo it hard to say. The offense was pretty perfect in the first half. Both Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Darnold were throwing darts left and right, converting third downs, and most importantly, not turning the ball over. Even Josh McCown was 1/1 on the first pass of the game. The three quarterbacks were 21/27 with 185 yards, 2 TDs, and no turnovers. That just cements my claim that this is the best quarterback room in the league. Many people around the league have said Josh McCown is the number one guy you would want mentoring a young quarterback. He doesn’t care about being on the field at this point, he cares about winning, and helping the young guys develop. Teddy Bridgewater has proven he can be a good starting quarterback in this league and has a ton to prove to the world that he seems very capable of. And of course, the Jets number one draft pick, Sam Darnold. The golden boy from USC looked awesome last night. He was playing like someone who’s been a pro for years. Not taking too many risks, delivering the smart throws, and NOT TURNING THE BALL OVER!

Now let’s get into the negatives. Elijah McGuire was going to be the returner this year, but after his injury in training camp the return game became a question mark. Rookie RB Trenton Cannon returned 3 punts, but muffed two of them. Andre Roberts also returned one putt and had a really nice return. If I was to guess, Cannon will be returning kicks and Roberts will be returning punts come week one. Another issue was the lack of offense in the second half. In a real game they can’t afford to let teams back into games. When they get a lead like that they need to slam the door shut on the other team by piling on the points. However, the strategy of a preseason game is a little different so I can’t be too mad. The only other problem is who are we going to start at QB Week One. At this point it seems like starting McCown is out of the picture, his role seems pretty clear as almost a QB coach at this point. However, he will remain QB1 on the depth chart until the Jets decide who they want to go with week one. If Teddy starts and struggles the Jets will immediately demand Darnold. However, if Darnold struggles off the bat and Teddy comes in and plays well that could kill Darnold’s confidence. We’ll just have to wait and see how they both do the next couple weeks.
Numbah one has made it clear who his guy is.
The debate should be a short one: Sam Darnold should be the starting QB right now. Jets found their guy.

I’ll have a full Jets season preview before Week 1 and hopefully things will be more clear then. For now, enjoy this.
The No. 3 overall pick looked sharp in his preseason debut.
