Get used to these blogs, because they will be coming in rapid succession as the PGA Tour gets in to the meat and potatoes of their season. But as you may know… this is my weekly Tiger Update, and this week he will be playing in the Genesis Open hosted by Riviera Country Club in LA. If you remember, on my podcast (Loud N’ Obnoxious, maybe you’ve heard of it?) I said Tiger would post a Top-25 week, and he finished T23 (Humble brag that I’m a fucking genius) when he played his first competitive tourney of 2018. Well, as we get into our second Eldrick showing of the year, let’s dive into what to expect, what to look for, and who to bet on.
Tiger is playing in a much more intense field this week, with the young guns, and the World’s top golfers all present. Rory and his limp dick putter will be there, DJ and his smoke show wife will be in attendance, and of course our friends JT, Rickie, & Spieth will all be vying for the coveted LA prize. But who gives a fuck about any of those guys when El Tigre is in the field… NO ONE, that’s who. But there is some cause for excitement while you’re slaving away at your desk at the tail end of this week… Tiger is playing with Rory and JT, so there will a huge following for this group, and solid viewing for Thursday/Friday entertainment. So, hide your wives, girlfriends, or the occasional PGA Tour liaison (Rory can snag these chicks too).
So let’s take a look at what we can expect from our boy… Tiger hasn’t played Riviera in a competitive tourney in 12 fucking years. The last time he played this tourney (2006), Paulina hadn’t found out what cocaine smells like, and Rickie was still finger-blasting girls in middle school. So the course, his game, and the world has changed drastically since his last visit… So expectations, with a stacked field and an unfamiliarity with the track could hinder TW’s climb up the leaderboards this weekend. Not saying he can’t make a great showing this week, but when you listen to his presser from today, you hear him saying he needs to be smart about the reps he takes on the course, as well as “there’s a lot of work left to do” (slight concern).
He also mentioned in his time off since he played two weeks ago, that he was trying to clean up his swing, while keeping his putting sharp. Riviera is a course that won’t punish you if you are arrant off the tee, or miss a lot of GIR’s, but he’s still gotta be sharp considering his competition this week. He’s gotta stay focused, and on his A-game with his putter again if he wants to be playing on the weekend. I’m taking Tiger to make the cut. I think he barely sneaks in, probably because he’s draining 20 footers… and hope he can make a run on moving day, or with an early Sunday tee time.
Don’t get me wrong, nothing would get me more #torqued than to have him playing the back 9 on Sunday afternoon in contention, but I don’t see it as likely with where his game currently is… So we’re gonna aim for another Top-25 finish, and possibly sneak into a fun pairing on Sunday for all the patrons and spectators at home. Here’s to wishing, hoping, praying… But like he mentioned in the presser “I’ve got a lot of room for improvement and a long way to go”, and the goal is to be primed by April for a run at another Green jacket… So look to @LNOpodcast on twitter for live golf action/recap from Thursday-Sunday (assuming TW is still playing). Also, don’t forget to fire in your futures for this weekend, Tiger’s getting some solid ML’s.
