I’ve been in the same fantasy football league for the past 11 years. This year is entering our 12th season of the league, and four out of eight members have been there for the whole time. It’s unbelievable that for 60% of my life (I’m 20 years old) I’ve been playing in the same league. Yes, you can blast me for being in an eight-man league, but to be completely honest, eight-man leagues are a lot more competitive than ten or 12-man leagues. Every team is good, and if a big injury happens, a team can easily recover.
One of the best parts of the league is the offline draft we have every year. Anyone that does offline drafts knows that they’re one of the best days of the entire year. The food, the atmosphere, and the feeling of fantasy football being back is always incredible. However, the issue this year was that due to school and jobs of our league members, we weren’t able to find a common date that everyone was free to meet up and have an offline draft.
We didn’t have many options here. We either had to have an online draft and break the tradition, or find a very creative way to have our draft. It turned out, that we figured out the perfect way to have an offline draft, but not all be together. How? The answer is Google Hangout and Google Docs. This sounds absolutely crazy, but it worked extremely well.
At 6:15 PM Wednesday, we all joined Google Hangout so that we can see each other. There were minimal audio issues. In addition, we created a draft board on a Google Doc, and color coded it so that it looked like an actual draft board with stickers. The video chat and draft board were side by side on everyones screens, and every was able to type their pick into the document after it was announced.
Here’s what the electronic draft board looked like (yes, a kicker was taken in the 9th round):
The draft was completed in about 3 hours, and it was almost the same thing as having our actual draft in person. I highly recommend this method for anyone who has a long-distance fantasy league, and doesn’t like timed online drafts. It truly works perfect.
P.S: You can say I’m more than ready for week 1 (look at my insane team).
