Is Betting On A Guy With One Hand To Win A Fight My Most Degenerate Bet To Date?

If you ever wondered how Jamie Lannister might fare in the UFC, you’re about to find out folks (if you don’t know who Jamie Lannister is, please stop reading and go culture yourself ASAP). Nick Newell, who was born with a congenital amputation of his left hand, is fighting for a UFC contract tonight on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series.
Most people would call this an underdog story, but according to Vegas it technically isn’t. Newell is a -135 favorite (on 5Dimes) and rightfully so. Guy is 14-1 as a pro. The only L on his record was handed to him by Justin Gaethje, who just so happens to be the seventh ranked UFC 155er at the moment. And that fight went to decision (yup, you read that right….a Gaethje fight went to decision). So clearly, Newell can scrap.
Newell’s opponent, Alex Munoz, is undefeated at 4-0, but really hasn’t beaten anyone of note. He does train at Team Alpha Male, so he does have that going for him, but his opponents have a combined record of 6-7. He’s also far less experienced than Newell and, despite having the advantage in the ‘number of hands’ category, doesn’t look to be as well versed technically anywhere else.
So from a betting perspective, I have no problem laying the hammer down on Newell here. Is it my most degenerate bet to date? Absolutely fucking not (I bet on eSports the other day). Honestly I think we’re getting good value on the odds here simply because people are probably blindly betting the guy with two hands. In most other situations, that would probably be the play right? But when you fight like this:
I’d say you’re probably worth a bet.
So punch that ticket and strap the fuck in ladies and gentleman. Nothing like partaking in mid-week degeneracy to get your blood pumping. And nothing screams ‘I’M A FUCKING DEGEN’ like betting on a UFC event on a random Tuesday night, and choosing to back the guy with one hand.
